One in Five.
Take your five best friends and stand them before you and think about this.
One
in Five of those friends will be solicited online by a predator at some
point in time. Which one of those five are you willing to sacrifice to
a predator? The answer should be none of them.
So how do you protect yourself and your friends?
The answer is simple.
Speak up!
Is it a hard thing to do? It can be.
Is it necessary? YES!
There is at least one adult in your life that you trust.
It is ok to go to that adult and say HELP ME!
It
doesnt matter who that adult is. Your parents, your teacher, preacher,
bus driver, or even your best friends parents. It can even be a Law
Enforcement Officer or Agency here on Myspace. They will help you.
A Voice can be a powerful weapon. Just ask anyone who has spoken up. And every voice has a right to be heard.
If
you have been solicited online or sent inappropriate materials, DO NOT
DELETE ANYTHING!!!! It can be used to stop a predator in their tracks.
So what steps do you take to protect yourself?
Be careful what information you put online. Any identifying information is TMI.
Know
who you are talking to online. Whether it be a social networking site,
chat room, instant messaging, or an online game. Any site that has chat
capability has the ability to contain a predator.
Use Common Sense. If your intuition tells you that something is not right, it probably isnt.
Listen to that "little voice in your head"
Add
"Safe Friends" - - - Your parents, your relatives, and even Legitimate
Law Enforcement Officers and Agencies. Even if you are on another site,
and someone solicits you, you know you still have a place to turn to if
you need it.
Remember that if you do not know someone in real life you cannot be sure they are who they say they are!
Set your pages to private, so you know who is viewing them.
It is okay to speak up.
It is okay to say "I need help!"
Take a stand against predators!.
If
you come across a predator page, REPORT IT TO CYBERTIPLINE, THE
NATIONAL CENTER FOR MISSING AND EXPLOITED CHILDREN OR LAW ENFORCEMENT.
REMEMBER: IF YOU GET THAT PAGE DELETED, THEY CAN COME BACK AGAIN AND
YOU WILL HAVE TO FIND THEM AGAIN AND IT IS AN ENDLESS CIRCLE.
WHAT GOOD DOES IT DO?
Remember: No more Victims, No More Survivors!
